30 Apr Portage an ABC quarterfinalist
While Portage did not advance beyond the quarterfinalist round of the America’s Best Communities competition, a $10 million initiative to stimulate economic revitalization in small towns and cities, the town did receive $50,000 in its selection as a quarterfinalist.
The selection was made by an independent group of expert judges from a pool of over 135 community applicants. The 50 quarterfinalist communities had six months to shape and refine their revitalization plans to compete for the grand prizes totaling $5 million.
DISH, CoBank, The Weather Channel and Frontier Communications, served as major sponsors of the event.
“As the largest telecommunications company focused on rural America, we recognized the need for and the economic impact of new, strategic investments on the revitalization of small towns and communities across rural America,” Frontier Communications Executive Chairman Maggie Wilderotter said. “We launched America’s Best Communities to inspire innovation and foster sustainable local growth, while driving increased investment in America’s rural communities. We congratulate the 50 winning communities that have proven they have what it takes to be America’s best.”
In addition to claiming the $50,000 prize, the community can claim to be among the 50 best in America. The money Portage received will be directed toward economic development initiatives.
