Kindschi chosen County Library Board Advocate of the Year

Kindschi chosen Columbia County Library Board Advocate of the Year

Each year, the library directors from the 10 Columbia County libraries select a person or organization as nominees for its Advocate of the Year. The Columbia County Library Board then reviews the nominations and selects from those presented.

Karl Kindschi, Portage Library Board of Trustees President, was chosen as this year’s Columbia County Library Board Advocate of the Year.

“I’ve learned a lot about the library a little at a time,” said Kindschi, in his remarks upon receiving the designation, “and tried to do my best in the leadership as much as I could, and I’ve come to love the library.”

Portage Library Director Debbie Bird nominated Kindschi and presented him with the plaque from the Columbia County Library Board during the Portage Library Volunteer Luncheon on April 25.

“Karl has been both a leader and an advocate for the library,” said Bird. “He has immersed himself in the budget, both City and County, hired multiple Directors for the library, served as a Friends (of the Portage Public Library) liaison, participates in library programs, including story times and local author presentations and has been a staunch supporter of the role of the library in our community.”

Bird said Kindschi defends the Library Bill of Rights and the Freedom to Read–principles that govern the fundamental philosophy of all libraries.

Bird also noted that the “Library Board has benefited from Karl’s expertise, as municipal judge, leader, local advocate, businessman, author and humanitarian. He is one of the most positive role models and leaders that I know. As an influential participant within the community, Karl is respected throughout Portage and the county. He is known for his honesty, integrity, generosity, kindness, optimism, thoughtfulness, and his passion.”

“Karl Kindschi embodies the characteristics that best represent the meaning, the purpose and the marrow of librarianship and public libraries,” Bird said.
